Happy Kentucky Derby Day! DID YOU KNOW…

kentucky-derby-icon-whiteI grew up in the Carolanne Farms neighborhood in Kempsville. My parents bought in the first phase of the development in the early 60’s, when there were still farms and race horses right down the street. You may wonder what this has to do the The Derby. Take a look at the street names in Carolanne Farms: Whiraway, Citation, Sir Barton, Hill Prince…ALL PIMLICO STAKES WINNERS AND/OR TRIPLE CROWN WINNERS, many of which were bred in Virginia!

In the United States, the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, commonly known as the Triple Crown, is a title awarded to a three-year-old Thoroughbred horse who wins the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes. The three races were inaugurated in different years, the last being the Kentucky Derby in 1875. These races are now run annually in May and early June of each year. The Triple Crown Trophy, commissioned in 1950 but awarded to all previous winners as well as those after 1950, is awarded to a Triple Crown winner.

Only twelve horses have won the Triple Crown: Sir Barton (1919), Gallant Fox (1930), Omaha (1935), War Admiral (1937), Whirlaway (1941), Count Fleet (1943), Assault (1946), Citation (1948), Secretariat (1973), Seattle Slew (1977), Affirmed (1978), and American Pharoah (2015). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triple_Crown_of_Thoroughbred_Racing_(United_States)

kentuckyderby-hero7The Preakness Stakes is an American flat thoroughbred horse race held on the third Saturday in May each year at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. It is a Grade I race run over a distance of 9.5 furlongs (1 3⁄16 miles (1,900 m) on dirt. Colts and geldings carry 126 pounds (57 kg); fillies 121 lb (55 kg). It is the second jewel of the Triple Crown, held two weeks after the Kentucky Derby and three weeks before the Belmont Stakes.

First run in 1873, the Preakness Stakes was named by a former Maryland governor after a winning colt at Pimlico. The race has been termed “The Run for the Black-Eyed Susans” because a blanket of yellow flowers altered to resemble Maryland’s state flower is placed around the winner’s neck. Attendance at the Preakness Stakes ranks second in North America among equestrian events, only surpassed by the Kentucky Derby. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preakness_Stakes
